Imagine being able to hear the forest calling for help—warning of a wildfire before it spreads, or sharing insights about its health and growth. That’s the vision behind Dryad’s "Internet of the Forest".

Challenge & Responsibilities

Dryad’s wildfire detection sensors already made it possible to catch fires early, but their apps—used for planning, deploying, and monitoring the sensors—needed to evolve. They had to be easier to use in rugged forest environments, smarter in planning sensor placement, and consistent across platforms.

Simon Gwinner

I joined Dryad’s team to observed how sensors were deployed and mapped the challenges users faced like troubleshooting in remote areas or managing multiple devices efficiently. We also tested how upcoming hardware upgrades, like integrated NFC chips, could speed up deployment.

The insights from the research shaped a new sensor deployment mobile app, offering step-by-step guidance to simplify installation and solve technical issues on-site.

Planning where to place sensors and gateways is key to protecting forests effectively. We reimagined how users could map out coverage areas. The result was an intuitive, efficient planning experience that optimized sensor coverage automatically.

Dryad’s tools had grown quickly, but without a unified design system, inconsistencies emerged. My task was to create a foundation that could support their evolving web and mobile platforms.

Simon Gwinner

Simon had in a short amount of time a wide and long lasting impact on our product. He brought a hands-on approach to designing concepts and screen flows while also contributing effectively to our research and strategic initiatives. He works autonomously, delivers quickly, and grasps complex problems with ease.

Outcome

By the end of our 3-month collaboration, Dryad’s digital tools were transformed into a cohesive, user-friendly ecosystem. The redesigned sensor deployment app streamlined on-site installations, while the enhanced web app introduced an intuitive planning experience for optimizing sensor coverage. A scalable design system brought consistency across platforms, ensuring future growth could be supported efficiently.
